Cinemagraphs of an old African beach

May 2017 - art

I’ve wanted to make a cinemagraph since I first saw one on Reddit. The stars aligned: when I visited Lamu, I actually remembered. Keeping this in mind, I took a bunch of pictures in continuous shooting.

Realizing that creating a nice cinemagraph would be a lot of work, I first threw my pictures onto Google photos. The automatic “animation” utility would give a good preview for how they might look. Here’s how they turned out (slow loading!):

They came out better than expected — some of the gifs are a bit choppy, and my suspicion is it’s related to my shooting speed (the M10 has 2 speeds). The one with the old, rusted motorboat seems to look good — and has the most potential for telling a story. It will be paired with a handdrawn animation. I have tried a simple one before:

At this point I dearly, dearly regretted not taking cinemagraph photos in Munich and Copenhagen as well.

Next steps are to actually make the cinemagraph. Conveniently enough, the sidebar on the r/cinemagraph subreddit already had a walkthrough video:

Goal: make it better than the one autogenerated by Google.
